Which backdrops and sets work for cap-and-gown portraits
The gown reads best against a clean, controlled backdrop, and we have seven sets under one roof so you can shoot several looks in one slot without driving anywhere.
Most graduation sessions I see use two or three of these.
Cyclorama: the clean portrait and the cap-throw
The white cyclorama / infinity wall is an 8×6 m seamless corner with 19+ colour backdrops. White gives you the classic gown portrait with no distracting edges, and the height lets you catch the mortarboard mid-air for the cap-throw. Switch to a deep colour if your gown is dark and you want contrast instead of a bright key.
This is the workhorse for graduation. If you book only one zone, book this one.
Loft and Living Room: the warm, human version
A warm Loft set or the vintage Living Room trade the studio-white look for texture, brick, and soft daylight styling. These work when parents and family join the frame and you want photos that feel like a moment, not an ID card. Great for the «sitting on the sofa in the gown, laughing» shots that end up framed at home.
Fashion: the editorial grad portrait
Booking a personal-brand shoot alongside your grad photos? The editorial Fashion zone gives you a sharper, magazine-style setup. Some creators use graduation as the excuse to refresh their whole portfolio in one visit.

The industrial Container set reads urban and gritty, a nice counterpoint if the classic white portrait feels too formal for you.

Cap, gown, tassel and props: what to bring and how to style it
Bring your own gown. We supply the space and the lights, not the regalia, so plan the outfit before you arrive.
Most graduates source the gown through their university, or rent through a supplier like Ede & Ravenscroft, or grab it as part of a photographer’s package. We don’t stock caps or gowns, and that keeps your rental cheaper because you’re only paying for the room.
A few things that make the frames look right:
- Tassel side. Tradition puts the tassel on the right before you graduate and the left after. If you want the «officially done» look, shoot it on the left.
- Mortarboard flat. Keep the cap level and pushed slightly back off the forehead so your eyes stay visible, not shadowed under the brim.
- What to wear underneath. White, cream, or pastel photographs cleanest under most gown colours. Busy prints fight the gown, so keep it simple.
- Double-sided tape. Gowns shift and gape. A strip of tape keeps the collar sitting straight between shots.
- The cap-throw. Save it for last on the cyclorama. Throw on a count, shoot in burst, and expect a few tries before everyone’s cap peaks at the same height.

Lighting and setup: what the studio provides
Every booking includes two studio flash heads plus any modifier you need, already in the room. You don’t rent light separately for a standard photo session.
That covers a clean gown portrait out of the box: key light, fill, and a modifier to soften it. Profoto gear comes free on video bookings, and it’s available on photo bookings on request as a separate add-on. If your photographer wants to bring their own strobes instead, that’s fine too, the sets are yours to light how you like.

How long to book and the best time to shoot
For a solo grad, one hour is enough for two backdrops. For a group or family, book two hours so nobody’s rushed through the tassel-and-throw sequence.

We rent the space. We are not the photographer.
If you want someone to run the whole thing, shoot, direct, edit, and hand you finished images, that’s a full production service, and it’s run by a separate team (SL Media), not by the rental studio. Plenty of graduates prefer the rental route because it’s cheaper and they already have a friend who shoots.
