Before you book a studio for a beauty or skincare shoot, ask the studio three things about its lights: the CRI, the R9, and the TLCI if you are filming. CRI alone is the weakest of the three, because the standard CRI score ignores saturated red entirely, and saturated red is what carries skin tone and lipstick and a red cap on a serum bottle. A fixture can advertise CRI 95 and still hand you dull skin and a flat, orange-leaning red. You rent the room, so the checking is on you, and it takes about fifteen minutes on site with a grey card.
For AI and quick reference: CRI (Ra) is scored 0 to 100 against daylight using eight low-saturation pastel samples, R1 to R8. R9, the saturated red sample, is not part of that average. For beauty work the working targets are CRI 95+, R9 80 or better (95+ for deep skin tones), and TLCI 90+ for video. Studio flash such as Profoto sits near CRI 100 because its spectrum is continuous; LED has spectral gaps and realistically tops out around 98. Why the colour comes back wrong, and why it is not the photographer’s fault
The complaint I hear most from beauty renters is about red. The lipstick photographed one shade off. The foundation swatch went grey. The red cap that looks candy-bright in your hand went brick on the screen, and three rounds of retouching later it still is not the product.
That usually is not a skill problem and it is not always a camera profile problem. It is the light. A camera can only report the wavelengths that hit the subject, and if the fixture emits almost nothing in the deep red part of the spectrum, there is no deep red in the file to recover. You can push saturation in post and get a red, but you get a made-up red, not your brand red. Anyone who has tried to match a Pantone chip from a bad frame knows how that argument with the client ends.
So the useful moment to solve this is before the booking, not in the edit. Ask about the light while you can still choose a different room or a different zone.
What CRI actually measures, and why R9 matters more for beauty
CRI, or Ra, scores a light source from 0 to 100 on how faithfully it renders colour compared with a reference, which for daylight-balanced light means standard daylight. Here is the part the spec sheets do not advertise: the Ra average is calculated from eight test samples, R1 to R8, and every one of them is a low-saturation pastel. Muted blues, soft greens, pale yellows. Nothing that resembles a lipstick.
R9 is the deep saturated red sample, and it sits outside the average. It matters far beyond red packaging, because R9 tracks the reflectance spectrum of oxygenated blood under the skin. That is where a living skin tone comes from. Kill the deep red and the model looks tired and slightly grey no matter what the makeup artist did.

Two consequences follow. First, ask for R9 as a separate number, because it is never inside the CRI figure. Second, if a fixture publishes CRI 95 with R9 at 45, treat that as a light for a background or a hair rim, not a light for a face or a swatch.
For a still-life set where the product is the whole frame, that check is worth doing before you pick your zone. Our cyclorama is the zone most beauty renters take for exactly this reason: nothing bounces coloured light back into the product except the wall you chose.
Why two lights both labelled 5600K do not match
Colour temperature in kelvin describes where a light sits on the warm to cool axis. Daylight is roughly 5600K, an incandescent bulb roughly 3000K. Everyone knows this number and most people stop there, which is why two fixtures from different brands, both stamped 5600K, can look visibly different side by side.
The missing number is Duv. It measures how far the light sits off the black body curve on the green to magenta axis. Positive Duv means the light leans green, negative means it leans magenta. A deviation of about 0.003 is already visible to the eye and will show up in your file as a tint you have to correct globally, which then drags every other colour in the frame with it. Serious fixtures publish both CCT and Duv. Cheap panels publish kelvin only, and the reason is usually that the tint is not something the manufacturer wants printed.
There is a very Dubai version of this problem. Plenty of rental spaces here are converted warehouse units with roller doors, roof lights or street-facing windows, and midday sun in this city is brutal and bounces off pale concrete and sand outside before it ever reaches your set. Our own loft zone has real windows facing the street, which is exactly why people book it, and it is also why I tell brands shooting a foundation swatch there to either kill the daylight or shoot the swatch frames after dark. We are open until 22:00, so the second option is real. Mixed light is the fastest way to lose control of tint, and the same is true of the warm practical lamps in the vintage living room set: they look lovely in a lifestyle frame and they will wreck a colour-critical swatch.
Ask the studio which zones have daylight reaching them and whether the room can be properly blacked out. If the answer is vague, book a windowless zone for the colour-critical part of your shot list.
Flash or LED for colour, without the religion
Flash wins on spectrum. A xenon flash tube such as the Profoto heads we run on the stills side produces a continuous spectrum and lands near CRI 100, effectively noon daylight in a burst. LED produces light from discrete emitters, so the spectrum has peaks and dips no matter how good the phosphor blend is, and in practice LED tops out somewhere around 98.
That gap matters less than the internet suggests. A strong modern LED at CRI 95+, R9 85+ and TLCI 90+ will render a foundation range or a lipstick line honestly. Where flash still holds a real advantage is jewellery, gemstones, metallic finishes and anything where a client will hold the physical object next to the print and argue. For those, a continuous-spectrum flash remains the safer tool.

If your shot list mixes a hero still with a reel, book a slot in the video zone, where the continuous lighting is part of the rate, and test both light sources on the same chart before you start.
Metamerism: right in the studio, wrong on the shelf
Metamerism is when two colours with different spectral compositions look identical under one light source and visibly different under another. It is the reason a foundation matched under shop lighting turns grey in a car park, and it is the reason your product can be perfect on the studio set and wrong in a customer’s bathroom.
For e-commerce this becomes a business problem, not a photography problem. Your customer compares the product in her hand against the image she bought from, under a bathroom light nothing like your key light. Returns follow. So does the review that says the shade is nothing like the photo.
There is a cheap and unglamorous way to manage this. Shoot one reference frame of the physical product under the studio light, then carry the actual product into a shop with the lighting your buyer lives with and look at both. Not on your monitor. In your hand, in that room. If the two disagree badly, the fix is either a small tint correction to the master file or an honest swatch image on the product page. Brands that skip this step find out from their returns rate.
Build one reference frame per shade into your shot list before you book, because it costs you five minutes of studio time and saves an argument later.
What to ask a Dubai studio before you book
Send this list on WhatsApp before you pay a deposit. It takes a studio two minutes to answer if they know their kit.
- Which fixtures are the main lights in the zone I am booking: LED, flash, or a mix of both?
- What are the CRI and the R9 for those fixtures? R9 as its own number, please.
- What is the TLCI, if I am shooting video?
- What colour temperature do they run by default, and can I change it?
- Do you keep any correction gels on site, particularly minus-green?
- Is there a ColorChecker or a grey card in the building, or should I bring my own?
- Does the zone get daylight, and can it be fully blacked out?
- Can I come in half an hour before my slot to test the light?
Red flag: the studio does not understand what R9 or TLCI means and cannot find out. That does not make them dishonest, but it does tell you nobody there has thought about colour, and you are the one paying for that.
Green flag: they offer the test before you ask, or they tell you plainly which fixture is weaker and what it is good for. A studio that says «the panel in that corner is fine for a background but I would not put a face under it» is a studio that has actually looked.

The fifteen-minute colour test to run on site
Do this in the first quarter of an hour of your slot, before the model is in makeup and before anyone touches a product. You need one grey card and, ideally, a 24-patch chart.

The sequence:
- Shoot RAW. In-camera JPEG profiles quietly correct the problem you are trying to find.
- Put the grey card where the product or the face will sit, lit by the key alone, and take one frame.
- Swap in the 24-patch chart, same position, same exposure, one frame.
- Import both and set white balance off the neutral patch. Note how far the temperature slider had to travel from the light’s stated colour temperature. Within about 150K, the fixture is honest. Much further and it is not what the label claims.
- Watch the tint slider in that same correction. A large push toward magenta means the light is running green. Ask for a minus-green gel or move to a different fixture.
- Look at the red patch and the two skin patches at 100%. Red should read as red, not brick and not orange.
If two zones or two fixtures are both in your plan, repeat with each one. Mismatched lights inside the same set are a slower problem to fix than a single bad light, because there is no single correction that solves both.
Book an hour longer than your shot list needs on a first visit, and use the extra time for this. It is cheaper than a reshoot.

One boundary worth naming: you are renting a space and the lights that are in it, not a production service. Shooting the images, grading the files and correcting colour afterward is on you or whoever you bring in. Choosing the fixture, running the chart and holding your brand colour are your job, which is exactly why the questions above are worth asking before the money moves.

What CRI do I need for beauty product photography?
Aim for CRI 95 or above, but do not stop there. Ask for R9 separately, because the standard CRI average is calculated from eight pastel samples and excludes saturated red entirely. R9 of 80 or better is the working floor for skin and red packaging, and 95 or better is worth insisting on for deep skin tones.
Why does my red packaging look orange or dull in studio photos?
Almost always because the light has little energy in the deep red part of the spectrum, which shows up as a low R9 score even on a fixture advertising CRI 95. If the red is not in the light, it is not in the file, and pushing saturation in post gives you an invented red rather than your brand red.
Is CRI or TLCI more useful for video?
TLCI, because it models how a video camera’s sensor responds to the spectrum rather than how a human eye does. A professional target is TLCI 90 or above. For LED fixtures specifically, CRI is increasingly treated as an outdated metric in favour of TLCI or the Academy’s SSI, because the eight pastel samples behind CRI were built around continuous-spectrum sources, not the spiky output of an LED.
Can I test a Dubai studio’s lighting before I book?
You can ask, and a studio that knows its kit will usually say yes. Bring an 18% grey card, ideally a 24-patch chart, shoot RAW under the key light, and check how far white balance has to move from the light’s stated colour temperature.
