Short version: a professional photo studio in Dubai is one whose specifications you can verify before you pay for hours. Six checks settle it: ceiling height, clear shooting depth, the lighting inventory with stands and modifiers, the background system (painted cyclorama or paper backdrop), power circuits with a tethering position, and written terms for deposit, overtime and damage. All six take fifteen minutes on site, or five messages on WhatsApp if you cannot visit.

What makes a photo studio professional
The answer up front: professional means measurable. A studio that cannot give you its ceiling height in metres, or the policy for a scuffed cyclorama, is selling a room with good photos on Instagram.
Every item below is a number the studio already knows or a policy it has already written. The middle column shows the shape of a straight reply, with example figures rather than our own specifications.

Ceiling height: what to measure and what each metre buys
Straight answer: measure to the lowest obstruction, not the roof. Ducts, sprinkler heads and steel beams hang below the ceiling in nearly every Dubai warehouse conversion, and they are what a boom arm hits.
Height is the one specification you cannot work around. Move the light closer, change the lens, crop tighter. You still cannot raise a beam.

A ten-second test: ask them to raise a stand with a 90 cm softbox and tilt it down over the subject mark. If the box sits level with the model’s face, you are shooting flat light whether you planned it or not.

Floor area and shooting distance: the lens maths people skip
Short version: the room needs camera-to-subject distance plus subject-to-background distance. Your lens sets the first, background cleanliness sets the second.
On a full-frame camera the distance in millimetres is roughly subject height times focal length divided by the 24 mm sensor height. For a two-metre frame, meaning a person plus headroom:

Then add the second gap. Your subject stands two to three metres off the background so the key light does not spill onto it, which means an 85 mm full-length portrait wants nine to ten metres of usable depth. Few Dubai studios have that in a straight run, ours included, which is why shooters here do full length at 50 mm and keep the 85 for beauty.
Our 8 by 6 metre cyclorama gives eight metres of clean width, which is what group work and lateral movement need. Depth deserves its own question, because the camera can back out of the cyc and gain distance the cyc dimensions never show: how far can the camera physically stand from the background wall?
Work out the tightest lens you need, then ask for that distance in metres before you book.
Lighting: what to count and how to ask
Direct answer: count the heads, then the modifiers, then the stands and the sandbags. «Professional lighting» is a phrase. An inventory is a list of objects you can photograph.
Five questions cover it:
- How many light heads are on site, and what output in watt-seconds?
- Which brand family, and is there a trigger for my camera mount? Profoto and Godox triggers are not interchangeable, and a head with no matching trigger is a paperweight.
- Which modifiers? A softbox, a beauty dish, a strip box and grids do different jobs, and plenty of studios own one big softbox and call it a kit.
- How many C-stands, arms and sandbags? A C-stand with an arm holds a light above a subject. Without one, every light sits at head height.
- Is lighting inside the hourly rate or billed separately, and who rigs it?
Question five is where most Dubai misunderstandings start. Profoto heads come with video bookings at no extra charge, because video needs constant light for the whole take. On a photo booking the rate covers the space and the set, and the Profoto kit is added on request. Get any studio’s answer in writing, since «lighting available» has meant both things to me.
Strobe or continuous LED
Strobes fire with the shutter, freeze motion, and let you work at f/8 and ISO 100. Continuous LED shows you what you are getting and runs for video.
Colour temperature is where LED sets quietly fail. Daylight fixtures sit at 5600K. Run half the set at 5600K and the rest at 3200K, and skin tones drift in a way white balance never fully rescues. Ask whether every continuous fixture runs at the same colour temperature.
Video changes the question completely, and a room rigged for continuous light is priced separately from a photo booking. Ask what the studio provides versus what you bring before you book either.
Background: cyclorama or seamless backdrop
The short answer: a cyclorama is a permanent curved wall with no corner between floor and wall. A seamless backdrop is a paper or vinyl roll on a stand. They cost the studio very different amounts to maintain, which is why the rules differ.

The inspection point is upkeep. Heel marks along the cove and a grey tide line at the base become retouching hours you did not budget.

Power, circuits and tethering
Answer first: ask how many separate circuits feed the set, not how many sockets are on the wall. Ten sockets on one circuit is one circuit.
The UAE runs 230 V at 50 Hz on 13 A plugs, so a socket line at that amperage tops out near 3 kW. That sounds generous until a shoot day stacks two LED panels, a steamer, a hair dryer and a kettle onto it. I have watched a breaker trip because a steamer and a 300 W panel went on the same line mid-boil. Eight minutes of a paid hour, gone.
Tethering needs three answers: a socket within cable reach of the camera position, a stable table for the laptop, and gaffer tape for a five-metre USB run across the floor. Ask about a tether clamp as well, because a yanked cable can kill the camera port. Some studios have a dedicated cart, some hand you a chair.

Makeup and prep area
In one line: a prep area protects your paid shooting hours.
Book the two-hour minimum at AED 700, let the model do makeup inside it, and you have paid studio rate for foundation. A separate station lets hair and makeup run in parallel with your lighting test.
Look for a mirror with even front-facing light rather than an overhead downlight that carves shadows under the eyes, a socket at the station, and a changing area with a door. A base judged under 3000K light and then shot under 5600K strobes reads wrong in the skin, so ask about that too.
Tell the studio when hair and makeup start, then book your shooting hours to begin after that.
Loading, parking and access
The practical bit: the twenty metres between your car and the set decide how the day starts.
Is there a step, a lift, or a door narrow enough to stop a garment rail? Is parking free or paid, and will you be hunting for a space at 9 am?

If your shoot involves furniture or a rail of samples, name the largest item when you enquire and ask for a photo of the entrance.
Deposit, overtime and the rental agreement
Get it in writing: the money terms belong in a message you can keep before you transfer anything. Four numbers matter: the deposit, the overtime increment, the cancellation window, and whether VAT sits on top of the quoted rate.
Deposit practice in Dubai varies. Some studios take a share of the booking to hold the slot, with reported figures running from a fifth of the total up to half, sometimes non-refundable. Others take a refundable damage deposit returned after the walkthrough. Discovering which one applies after you have paid is the bad version.
Overtime is the second trap. Common market practice is billing in full-hour increments, so ten minutes over becomes a paid hour. Ask whether overtime is available at all, because the next booking may already be loading in.

The 15-minute walkthrough
Use this on site. In this order it catches almost everything that ruins a shoot day.
- Stand on the subject mark, look up, note the lowest thing above you.
- Walk backwards to the furthest point the camera can occupy. One pace is roughly 0.75 m.
- Ask for a light on a C-stand with a boom arm over the mark. Watch what it hits.
- Look at the base of the cyclorama curve, or the leading edge of the paper roll.
- Count the heads and modifiers in the room today, not in the website gallery.
- Ask which sockets sit on which circuit, and where the breaker box is.
- Sit at the makeup station and look at your own face in the mirror.
- Walk from the parking space to the set carrying something heavy.
- Ask for deposit, overtime and damage terms in a message you can keep.
- Check the booked hours against your call sheet, load-in and load-out included.

What we tick, and what we do not
A checklist written by a studio owner is worth nothing if the owner exempts himself.
We have seven built sets instead of one empty room: the 8 by 6 metre cyclorama, a loft, a vintage living room, a private jet interior, a shipping container, and a kitchen set for food and lifestyle work, plus 19 or more backdrops. That is why brands drive out to DIP2 rather than shooting on white closer to town.
What we do not have is a crew. We rent the space and the sets, you bring the photographer or shoot it yourself, and the files are yours. If you need a full production team, that is a different business and I will say so.
