The photographers are the repeat bookings. They shoot four or five maternity clients over a winter season and already know which corner they want. The mums booking for themselves come once, and they ask the better questions, because they are thinking about comfort and privacy rather than f-stops.

Book the room six to ten weeks before your due date. Weekend evening slots in the cooler months go first, and at week 35 you are choosing from what is left.
One local fact worth planning around: outdoor shooting in Dubai is pleasant from roughly October to April. Between May and September a bump, a long gown and 40 degrees do not mix, so summer maternity sessions are an indoor job by default. Our sets are air-conditioned year round, so the summer booking pattern here barely dips.

How many hours to book
Two hours covers most maternity sessions with two or three looks. One hour works only for a single outfit on one backdrop.

The change is the part people underestimate. At 34 weeks, getting in and out of a fitted gown takes longer than it did at 20 weeks, and rushing it is how you end up with tense shoulders in every frame.
Book three hours if the family is joining, if you have four outfits, or if your photographer wants two different zones. Four hours at 350 AED comes to 1,400 AED before VAT, still the cheapest line of the day for most people. Send me the shot list and I will say whether two hours is enough.
What the room needs when the model is 34 weeks pregnant
Comfort decides how the pictures look. A tense, overheated model photographs exactly like a tense, overheated model.
The checklist I would run through with any Dubai studio, ours included:
- A changing room with a real door. Not a corner with a rail. Maternity outfits are often sheer or open-front, and nobody wants to change behind a light stand.
- Air conditioning that is already cold when you arrive. Ask whether it runs for the whole slot. In a warehouse studio in July that question matters.
- Somewhere to sit inside the set. Lighting adjustments take a few minutes each time. Our loft and living room sets have real furniture, so the break happens in frame rather than in a corridor.
- A restroom close to the shooting floor and parking at the entrance. We sit in DIP2 at SP Warehouses, so the walk in with a bag of outfits is short. At 34 weeks that is not a small detail.
We do not stock water or snacks, so bring your own. Flat shoes for the walk in, and a cardigan for between looks even in summer. Ask me on WhatsApp what is in the changing area before you book.
How the bump gets lit: soft key, rim light, silhouette
Two lights do almost all the work in maternity photography. A large soft source in front for skin, and a narrow source behind for the edge of the belly.
The front light wants to be big and close. A large softbox or an octabox around 120 cm gives soft falloff across the face and the curve of the bump, and feathering it slightly away keeps the brightest part of the frame on the face rather than the stomach. Roughly 45 degrees, a little above eye level.
The rim light is what makes the picture. A stripbox behind the model at a three-quarter angle, aimed back toward the camera side, draws a bright line down the arm and along the curve of the belly. That single line separates the body from a dark backdrop. Flag it so nothing spills into the lens.
A full backlit silhouette is a different setup. Switch the front light off, light the white cyclorama behind, expose for the background, and the model goes dark. Shoot in profile with hands framing the bump, because in a silhouette the outline carries the photograph. Loose chiffon lit this way glows at the edges.
Video bookings include two Profoto flash heads plus modifiers, exactly the key and rim pair above, at no extra charge. On a photo booking that same kit can be added separately on request. Photographers who prefer their own strobes are welcome to bring them, and I will send the modifier list on WhatsApp before you book.
Backdrops and sets: which zone suits which look
Pick the set by the mood you want.
- Clean editorial portraits and silhouettes. The 8×6 m cyclorama with 19 plus backdrop colours. White for the airy high-key look, black or deep grey for the rim-lit silhouette. The seamless corner means no floor line behind the model.
- Warm, at-home feeling with daylight. The loft set with real windows gives soft directional daylight through the middle of the day, which suits the barefoot, hand-on-bump kind of frame. Bring a white reflector for the shadow side.
- Vintage and heirloom. The living room set with older furniture works when a couple wants photographs that look like a memory rather than a campaign.
Most sessions use two zones: cyclorama first while everyone has energy for the technical setup, then loft for the softer half. Moving between zones happens inside the same booking window, so two hours realistically gives you two distinct looks. Tell me the mood you are after and I will suggest the pairing.
Fabrics that move, and what dies on camera
Flowing fabric is the oldest trick in maternity photography, because a curve reads better when something around it is in motion.
What works: chiffon and tulle gowns with long trains, jersey wrap dresses that hold the shape without squeezing, a fitted knit in a solid colour, a partner’s plain shirt worn as an oversized layer. Solid tones photograph cleaner than prints in almost every case.
What fights you: stiff structured jackets that hide the shape, busy patterns that pull the eye off the face, anything with a visible waistband cutting across the bump. Seamless underwear in a skin tone saves several frames.
Hang the outfits as soon as you arrive, since creases from the car ride show up under a hard rim light. And if you want fabric flying in frame, bring a small handheld fan or have someone toss the train on a count. Two or three looks is the sweet spot; more than four turns the session into a changing marathon.
Bringing your partner and older children
Up to 10 people fit in one zone, so family joining costs nothing extra. Time is the real currency.
Shoot the children in the first 20 to 30 minutes. Attention runs out fast and no amount of patience buys it back. Get the family frames done, then let someone take the kids to the seating area while you and the photographer work on the solo portraits without an audience.
Dress the partner and the kids in plain tones from the same family as your gown. Matching outfits look staged, clashing prints look accidental, a shared colour temperature looks intentional. WhatsApp me the headcount when you book so I hold the right zone.
Renting the studio versus buying a photographer package
Renting covers the room, the sets and the lights. It does not include a photographer, and that is the whole difference in the money.

- Which zone is held, and whether a second zone is free in the same slot.
- Whether you want Profoto added on a photo booking, since it comes free only on video bookings.
- What time your photographer arrives to set up, because setup runs inside the booked hour.
- The 5% VAT on top of the quoted rate, so the total is no surprise.

We rent the space. We are not the photographer.
If you want someone to direct the session, shoot it, retouch it and hand you finished images, that is a production service run by a separate team (SL Media), not by the rental studio. Plenty of mums book us precisely because they already have a photographer they trust and only need a proper room to shoot in.
