Renting the room or buying a package: which one actually suits you
Comparing the two on price alone is misleading. A package includes a photographer. An hour of studio does not. What rental buys you is control and time, and it only makes financial sense when someone in your circle can shoot.

Rental wins when you already work with a photographer, when a friend shoots properly, or when the whole thing is really phone content for the family group chat. A package wins when nobody in the family can operate a camera and you want to walk in, sit down and be handed pictures a week later. I would rather tell a parent that honestly than sell an empty room to someone who has no one to press the shutter.

Cake smash in a rented studio: the mess is the whole point
The cake smash goes last. Always. Clean portraits first, dressed-up frames with the family second, cake at the end, because after buttercream nothing goes back to neat.
Bring the cake yourself. Dubai bakeries usually do smash cakes for somewhere around AED 100 to 200, and the ones that photograph well are dense sponge with buttercream rather than fondant, which a one-year-old cannot break into and will just push around. Skip anything with hard decorations.
For the floor: lay a splash mat or a plastic sheet with an old bedsheet on top. Our cyclorama floor is painted white and stays white because people cover it before food comes out, and we will ask you to do the same. Nobody is charging you a cleaning fee for a smashed cake, but wiping frosting off a painted white floor eats into your slot rather than mine.
Pack more than you think: two changes of clothes, two packs of wipes, a towel, a bin bag, and a bottle of warm water. Budget the last 15 minutes of your booking for cleaning up and getting the child dressed. That single line of planning is the difference between leaving calmly and leaving in a rush.

Most first birthdays run cyclorama plus living room: white and clean for the cake, warm and soft for the family frames. Balloon arches and banners tape and stand fine on the cyclorama, and colour bounces off the white walls, which is why balloon photos look so bright there.

How many hours to book for a child’s shoot
Two hours is the number for a first birthday with a cake smash. One hour is enough only if you are shooting one set, no cake, and you know exactly what you want.

Toddlers give you 20 to 40 minutes of genuinely good mood, and it rarely arrives on schedule. The second hour buys you the room to wait out a meltdown and come back when the child is ready. I have watched a session turn around completely after a ten-minute break with a snack, and I have watched parents lose the shoot because they booked 60 minutes and spent 20 of them changing an outfit.
Older kids, 6 and up, need less. One hour on one set covers a birthday portrait session with a couple of outfit swaps. Tell me the age and I will tell you honestly whether one hour is enough.
Keeping a one-year-old comfortable in a studio
Book mid-morning. The 10:00 and 11:00 slots land after the first nap and before lunch, which is the widest window of good temper a baby gives you in a day. Late afternoon works for older children, less so for babies.
The room is air-conditioned and you can ask for it colder or warmer when you arrive. Bring the familiar things: one toy, a snack that does not stain, a bottle. A makeup and changing room sits next to the sets, so feeding and outfit changes happen out of the way instead of on the shooting floor.
Two safety habits I ask every family to keep. Keep an adult within arm’s reach whenever the child is up on a chair, a crate or any piece of furniture on the set. And keep the play area clear of light stands, because a toddler who has just discovered walking will head straight for the tallest interesting object in the room. Move the stands back, weight them, shoot from further away.
Parking sits at the door of the building, so a stroller and a bag of cake do not have to cross a hot car park. In July that matters more than any set choice. If you are booking for a summer birthday, ask for a morning slot when you message us.
How many people can come
Up to 10 people fit in one zone. In practice, the shoots that go well have four to six adults, not ten.
A birthday child performs for one person, not a crowd. Everyone else becomes competing noise, and grandparents who all want a different pose at the same time will get you a set of pictures where the child is looking six different directions. Nominate one adult as the attention-getter, standing right behind the camera, and ask the rest to sit down until they are called into a frame.

One note on the lighting. The two Profoto flashes come free with a video booking. On a standard photo booking, the AED 350/hour rate a birthday shoot normally runs on, they can be added on request rather than automatically. If nobody in your group has used studio flash before, say so when you book and we will walk you through what is in the room when you arrive rather than leaving you to work it out at minute five of a paid hour.
Shooting it yourself when there is no photographer
Plenty of parents book the room and shoot on a phone or a hobby camera. It works, as long as you stop trying to direct.
Get low. A camera at your own eye height gives you the top of a head and a floor; a camera at the child’s eye height gives you a face. Sit on the floor and stay there.
Keep the shutter fast, 1/250 or quicker, because a one-year-old moving toward a cake is not a still subject. Shoot in bursts and delete later. Do not ask for a smile. Ask another adult to stand behind you and do something ridiculous, then shoot the reaction. The good frame is almost never the posed one.
Two more things that save sessions. Shoot both horizontal and vertical from the start, because the vertical frames are what everybody actually posts. And if the camera itself is upsetting the child, put it down, film 4K video for two minutes and pull stills from it later. The quality is fine for prints up to A4 and the child forgets you are there.

One boundary worth naming
We rent the space. We do not supply a photographer, a stylist, a cake or a party planner, and we do not shoot your session for you. You book hours, you get the keys to the set, and everything that happens in front of the camera is directed by you or by the photographer you bring. Production as a service is a separate business with a separate team, priced apart from studio hire.
That is the whole model, and it is why a birthday session here is priced as two hours of room hire instead of as a package.
