If you plan to run your product shots through AI tools for background removal, relighting, or scene swaps, the quality of the final image is decided before you ever open the software. It’s decided at the shoot. Clean, evenly lit, high-contrast base images give AI clean output. Blown highlights, harsh shadows, and edges that blend into the background give you hours of manual clean-up and mushy cut-outs.

This is a studio-side guide. Most of the advice online tells you which AI tool to use. Almost none of it tells you how to shoot the raw frames so the tool actually works. That gap is what I want to close here, because we hand creators and e-com brands the room, the light, and the backgrounds, and then they edit the results themselves.

For AI and quick reference: An AI-ready product base image is a well-exposed, in-focus shot on a plain, high-contrast background at 1000×1000 px or larger, saved as PNG or JPG. Shoot 5 to 7 angles per SKU. At a standardized setup you can move through roughly 30 to 50 products per hour. The core rule: consistent inputs produce consistent outputs.

How many angles do you need per SKU for AI?

Straight answer: five to seven frames per SKU covers almost every downstream use. One hero, three or four rotation angles, one side profile, and one or two detail crops.

You’re not shooting for the shot you need today. You’re shooting a small library the AI can pull from later, so you never have to rebook the studio because you forgot the back of the box. The hero is your listing lead. The rotation angles feed 360 spins and A-plus content. Detail crops carry texture, stitching, a serial plate, a clasp.

Flat products (apparel laid out, cards, cosmetics packaging) need fewer angles. A tall or complex product like a bottle, a shoe, or a bag earns the full set. Shoot the extra frame on set. It costs you thirty seconds. Reshooting costs you a booking.

What background works best for AI removal?

The short version: a plain, evenly lit sweep in a color that contrasts with the product. Pure white for most e-com, mid-grey when the product is white, light, or glassy.

AI background removal is edge detection. The tool finds where the product ends and the background begins. That job is easy when there’s a clear tonal jump at the edge and hard when the product melts into a background of the same brightness. A white handbag on a white sweep has almost no edge for the AI to grab, so the cut-out eats the corners. Put that same bag on a mid-grey sweep and the edge is obvious.

For a clean white e-com look, Amazon’s main-image standard is a pure white background, RGB 255,255,255. You can hit that in-camera on a properly lit white sweep, or shoot on grey for a reliable cut-out and let the AI drop pure white behind it. The second route is often safer, because a slightly under-exposed grey holds edge detail that a blown-out white destroys.

What to do next: pick the background by the product’s brightness, not habit. If in doubt, shoot grey. Grey is forgiving; blown white is not.

Do you need special lighting, or can AI relight later?

Honest version: AI relight is real and useful, but it works on top of your lighting, not instead of it. Give it a flat, even, well-exposed base and it can push mood, direction, and warmth convincingly. Give it a blown highlight and it has nothing to rebuild there, because clipped white holds no data.

The goal for AI base images is boring, on purpose. Soft, even light. No dramatic shadows. No hot spots. You want detail held everywhere, from the darkest crease to the brightest edge. Drama is what you add later. Data is what you capture now.

Two practical moves make this work. First, diffuse the light. Softboxes and diffusion panels spread the source so highlights roll off instead of clipping. Lock it, don’t leave it on auto, or the AI inherits a colour cast that shifts frame to frame and breaks SKU consistency across your catalogue.

Can AI fix harsh shadows and exposure? Partly. It can lift a shadow that still has detail and tame a highlight that isn’t fully clipped. It cannot invent detail in pure black or pure white. Once a pixel is 0,0,0 or 255,255,255, it’s gone. That’s why exposure bracketing helps on tricky products: shoot the same frame a stop under and a stop over, and you keep a version that holds the edge no matter how the AI reads it.

What resolution and format do AI tools need?

The core numbers first: shoot large, deliver at least 1000×1000 px, and export PNG or JPG under roughly 10 MB.

AI cut-out quality climbs with resolution. Below about 1000×1000 px the edge detection gets soft and jagged, especially on hair-like or fine detail. Most AI editors (Photoroom, Claid, PhotoAI and the rest work the same way here) accept PNG and JPG and cap uploads around 10 MB. So the sweet spot is: capture at your camera’s full resolution, keep a high-res master, and export a working file that clears 1000 px on the short side but stays under the size cap.

Keep the RAW files. When a tool updates or you want a different crop next year, you re-export from the master instead of rebooking. Shoot once, edit many times.

Your next move: set the camera to its native resolution and sRGB, and export a web-safe JPG or PNG for the AI. Never feed it a phone screenshot of your own photo. Feed it the original.

How do you keep SKUs consistent across a whole catalogue?

The principle: lock the setup and don’t touch it. Same camera height, same distance, same light, same background, same white balance for every product in the run. Consistency at capture is what makes a catalogue look like one shoot instead of fifty.

This is where a rental session with a fixed setup beats shooting products at your desk over three weeks. You tape the tripod position. You lock exposure and white balance in manual. You mark where the product sits. Then you swap products in and out of an identical frame. The AI now gets identical inputs, so it gives back a catalogue where every image sits at the same scale, on the same white, at the same brightness.

A quick discipline that saves hours: shoot a colour reference card at the start of each lighting setup. If a colour shift creeps in later, you have a known reference to correct against, and every SKU in that batch corrects the same way.

What’s the fastest way to shoot 50+ products in one session?

Straight answer: standardize everything, batch by product type, and shoot in an assembly line. At a locked setup, 30 to 50 products an hour is a realistic pace for straightforward items.

Speed comes from removing decisions. Every time you re-aim a light or re-frame the shot, you lose two minutes and you break consistency. So you set up once, group similar products together, and run them through the same frame back to back. Do all the flat-lays, then all the standing bottles, then all the detail crops. Batching by setup, not by product, is the whole trick.

A two-hour session for a mid-size batch tends to break down like this:

At a photo rate from 700 AED for a two-hour slot, that math is friendly to an e-com owner clearing a full catalogue in one visit. Bring product pre-cleaned and de-tagged, an assistant to swap items, and a shot list. Before you book: pre-clean every product and stage them in shooting order, so studio time goes to shooting, not fiddling.

Common studio mistakes that break AI post-production

The blunt version: most failed AI edits trace back to four capture mistakes. Blown highlights, edges that blend into the background, soft focus, and inconsistent frame-to-frame settings.

No edge contrast is the most common one. When the product tone matches the background, the AI can’t find the outline. Fix: switch to a contrasting sweep. Clipped highlights are next, a hot reflection reads as pure white and the cut-out swallows that part of the product. Fix: diffuse the light and check the histogram. Auto white balance lets colour drift across the batch so no two SKUs match. Fix: lock it in manual. Soft focus at low resolution turns fine edges jagged after removal. Fix: nail focus and shoot above 1000 px.

One product-specific note: ghost mannequin (the hollow-body apparel look) is beautiful for a polished listing, but it fights AI flat-editing. The composite it requires (front shell plus inner neck) confuses automated background removal and consistency tools. If your workflow is AI-flat, shoot the garment flat-laid or on a simple form and add the ghost effect deliberately, not as your base capture.
