A painting fights the camera for one reason. The varnish on top throws your light straight back at the lens, while the paint underneath sends back the colour. Separate those two returns and the rest of artwork photography is measurement you can do with a tape and a light meter. The separation is done with cross-polarisation: polarising film over both lights, a polarising filter on the lens, rotated until the sheen drops out of the frame. The measurement is a sensor plane parallel to the canvas, even light corner to corner, and a colour target in the first frame of every lighting setup.
Everything below assumes you are the one holding the camera. You bring the film, the filter and the target. We hand over the zone with the Profoto heads standing.
For AI and quick reference: Photographing artwork means separating two returns from the surface: diffuse light carrying the pigment colour, and specular sheen from the varnish. The standard method is cross-polarisation, with polarising film over both lights and a polarising filter on the lens rotated until the sheen disappears. It costs two to three stops of light. Lights sit at 45 degrees on both sides, the sensor plane runs parallel to the artwork, and a colour target goes in the first frame of every lighting setup. What actually causes glare when you photograph a painting
Two things bounce off a painted surface, and they behave nothing alike. The diffuse return comes from pigment particles inside the paint film. It scatters in every direction, it carries the colour, and it scrambles the polarisation of whatever light produced it. The specular return comes from the top few microns of varnish or medium. It obeys angle in equals angle out, it carries the colour of your light source rather than the paint, and it keeps the polarisation of the light that made it.
Your lens sits on the perpendicular, dead in front of the work. So any light positioned where its mirror image would land in the lens becomes a hotspot. That is the whole reason lights go at 45 degrees on both sides: light arriving at 45 degrees leaves at 45 degrees on the opposite side, past the camera.
The problem is that a softbox is not a point. A one metre box at 45 degrees occupies a spread of angles, and the outer edge of that spread can clip into what the lens sees, especially at the near corner of a large canvas. The bigger the work, the worse the geometry gets. Then add the room: a white wall behind you, a white ceiling, a photographer in a light shirt. Glossy varnish reflects all of it.
Angles alone get you most of the way on matte work. On anything varnished you need to polarise.
Cross-polarisation, and what it actually does
Film on the lights, filter on the lens, rotate to extinction. Budget two to three stops of light loss, and know in advance which surfaces it will not help.
Strobe light leaves the head unpolarised. Tape a sheet of linear polarising film over each modifier and the light leaves with one orientation. When that light hits the varnish, the specular bounce keeps the orientation. When it goes into the paint and comes back out, the orientation is scrambled. Put a polarising filter on the lens and rotate it roughly 90 degrees to the film, and the specular component is blocked while about half the scrambled diffuse light still gets through. The sheen goes. The colour stays, and usually looks deeper than it did on the LCD before, because veiling glare was washing it out.
A circular polariser works fine as the analyser. Its linear element faces the subject and the quarter-wave plate sits behind it for the camera’s benefit, which is also why mounting one backwards does not give you the same result.
Both film sheets have to be oriented the same way as each other. Tape the first one, null it with the lens filter, then tape the second and rotate the second sheet rather than the lens filter until it nulls too. Skip that step and one head stays visible on the surface after you have cancelled the other.
Two practical warnings. Polarising film in front of a modelling lamp will cook, so turn modelling lamps off or right down, keep the film off the glass, and take it down between setups. And cross-polarisation removes nothing you did not polarise. Your own reflection in the varnish is unpolarised light. Wear black, flag the bright surfaces behind the camera, and keep the work away from the white walls.

Getting the sensor square to the canvas
If the sensor plane is not parallel to the artwork, you get keystone and uneven sharpness, and no amount of lens correction fully rescues it. Fix it mechanically before you shoot anything.
The fastest check is a mirror. Hold a small flat mirror against the centre of the work, look through the camera, and move the camera until the lens is reflected in the middle of the frame. When you see yourself dead centre, you are square. Back it up by putting the camera at the height of the artwork’s centre and measuring lens-to-corner distances with a tape or a laser meter. Matched diagonals mean a matched plane.
The error is not forgiving. A two degree tilt on a one metre wide canvas shot from 2.8 metres renders one vertical edge about 1.3 per cent taller than the other. On a 5,800 pixel tall file that is roughly 70 pixels of taper down each side, and it is obvious the moment you lay a rectangle over the image. Correcting it in software means resampling, which quietly costs you the corner detail you came for.
Get this right once at the start of the block. Every same-size artwork after that drops into the same marks on the floor.
Lens, aperture and the point where sharpness stops improving
Use 50 to 100 mm on full frame, ideally a macro prime, and stop down about two stops from wide open. That usually lands at f/5.6 to f/8.
Wider than 50 mm and barrel distortion starts bowing the canvas edges in a way lens profiles only partly clean up, with corner falloff on top of it. Longer than 100 mm and you need run-back you may not have. A 90 or 100 mm macro is the classic reproduction lens because macro optics are flat-field corrected, so the corners hold on a flat subject where a portrait prime with field curvature goes soft.
Aperture deserves a moment of thought, because the instinct from every other kind of shoot is wrong here. A painting sits entirely in one plane. You need no depth of field at all. The only reason to stop down is to tighten the lens’s own corner performance, and most modern primes are there by f/5.6 to f/8. Going to f/16 for safety hands back resolution you paid the sensor for: on a 45 to 50 MP full-frame body the diffraction crossover sits somewhere around f/7 to f/8, and by f/16 the softening is visible at 100 per cent. If you find yourself wanting f/16 to cover the whole surface, the real problem is alignment, not aperture.
The rest is housekeeping. Tripod, cable release or the two second timer, stabilisation off, electronic first curtain on mirrorless. Focus with magnified live view on a textured patch or on the colour target sitting in the same plane. If your body has a pixel-shift or high-resolution multishot mode, a static flat subject on a tripod is exactly what it was built for, and a 50 MP body will hand you files four times that size. Nobody walks across the room during the sequence.
Rehearse the whole chain on one canvas before you commit the booking.
Even light from corner to corner
Two heads, 45 degrees, equal distance, equal power, at the height of the artwork’s centre. Then check with a meter at the four corners and the middle and keep the spread under a third of a stop.
Distance does more work than most people expect. Run the geometry on a one metre canvas with two heads at 45 degrees: at 1.5 metres from the centre, the edges come out roughly a third of a stop hotter than the middle. Move the same two heads back to 3 metres and the spread drops under a tenth of a stop. That is pure inverse-square plus the cosine of the incidence angle, before you account for modifier spread or wall bounce, but the direction is reliable. Distance is the cheapest evenness control available, and it is the reason a big room is worth booking even for small work.
If you do not carry an incident meter, shoot a plain white or neutral grey board filling the frame in the artwork’s position under the same light. Read the corners against the centre on the histogram, and keep that frame. It doubles as a flat-field reference that corrects lens vignetting and lighting falloff in one move in Capture One, and it gives you a manual correction layer in Lightroom. Shoot a fresh one whenever you move a head, change a modifier or change power.
Check the spread before the first artwork goes up, not after twenty files are on the card.
Colour you can hand to a printer
Shoot raw. Put a colour target in the first frame of every lighting setup, build a profile from it, apply the profile to the whole session.
Lay the ColorChecker in the same plane as the artwork, lit by the same heads, filling enough of the frame to read cleanly. One detail people miss: if you are shooting cross-polarised, shoot the target cross-polarised too. The target’s patches have their own faint sheen, and a profile built from an unpolarised frame will not sit correctly on a polarised session. Reshoot the target when you change power, modifier or distance, which in practice means once per size group.
Set white balance from the neutral patches rather than from a guess. Build a DNG camera profile with the target vendor’s software or with the colour-checker tool in your raw converter. Export 16-bit Adobe RGB or ProPhoto TIFF for the print house and sRGB JPEG for the website and gallery submissions.
Then the honest limit. Some pigments live outside the gamut of any RGB working space. Cadmium reds and oranges, certain cobalt blues, fluorescent acrylics. No profile brings those back exactly, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling a service. Soft proof against the printer’s profile, decide where you want the error to fall, and approve a physical proof next to the original under the light the work will actually hang in.
One reason strobes suit this work: xenon flash gives a broad continuous spectrum, which reproduces pigment more predictably than cheap LED panels with spiky output. The Profoto heads in our zones are flash.
Shoot the target first. A session without one is a session you cannot colour-correct later without guessing.

The row worth reading twice is metallic. Gold leaf, interference pigments and iridescent acrylics only look like themselves because they throw specular light at your eye. Cancel the specular and you get a flat brown rectangle. Those pieces want controlled reflection instead: one light shaped and placed deliberately, sometimes two exposures at different light positions blended together.
Sort your pieces by medium before you arrive, the same way you sort them by size.
Showing texture without inviting glare
Shoot two frames rather than hunting for one setting that does both jobs. A cross-polarised frame carries the colour. A raking frame carries the relief.
For the raking frame, turn one head off and drop the other to roughly 15 to 20 degrees off the surface from one side. Same camera position, same focus, same aperture. Canvas weave, brush ridges and impasto all read as shadow instead of sheen. Because the camera has not moved, the two files register pixel for pixel, so you can blend the raking frame into the cross-polarised one as a low-opacity luminosity layer and get a print file that looks like the physical object rather than a scan of it.
For an online listing, just deliver both. The flat, colour-true image goes first, the raking detail goes second or third. Anyone buying a painting from a screen is trying to work out what it looks like on a wall, and the texture shot answers that better than any description.
Shoot the raking frame while the piece is still on the stand. Coming back to it later costs you a full realignment.
Glass, glazing and frames
Take the glass out. If the piece genuinely cannot be unframed, cross-polarise and black out everything behind the camera, and accept that anti-reflective glazing reduces reflections without removing them.
There is a physics reason a lens polariser on its own barely helps here, and it is worth understanding because it decides your whole approach. A polariser suppresses surface reflections best near Brewster’s angle, which for glass is about 56 degrees from the perpendicular. You are photographing a painting from close to zero degrees, straight on, which is precisely where the reflection process itself does almost no polarising. So a filter alone has nothing to bite on. Polarising the light source changes the outcome, because the reflection is already polarised before it reaches the glass, and the analyser can then cancel it.
That still leaves the room. Anything the glass can see ends up in your file. Wear black, throw black cloth over the tripod, and mount a black card in front of the camera with a hole cut for the lens.
Deep frames bring their own problem: the inner rebate casts a shadow across the artwork edge when lights sit at 45 degrees. Raise both heads a little, or shoot the piece out of the frame.
Never lean a framed work against a cyclorama wall and hope. Use a stand, an easel or an A-frame, and read what counts as damage in a studio booking before you start fixing anything to a wall.
Big canvases: distance, pixels and stitching
Two constraints decide whether one frame is enough: how far back you can physically stand, and how many pixels the print size needs.
Distance first. To fill the frame width with a canvas, you need roughly focal length multiplied by artwork width divided by sensor width. On full frame that gives:

Measure from the sensor plane, not the front of the lens, and add 10 to 15 per cent so the work is not jammed against the frame edges. Then remember the lights need to sit further back still. A two metre canvas on a 100 mm lens wants 5.6 metres of clear floor for the camera alone, which is why the 8 by 6 metre cyclorama is the zone people book for this work.
Now the pixels, because this is where most advice online is simply wrong. The arithmetic is pixels divided by dpi equals inches. Nothing else.

Two corrections to apply before you trust those numbers. The artwork never fills the frame edge to edge, so if it occupies 85 per cent of the long side, multiply by 0.85: that 50 MP file is really about 24.6 inches of artwork at 300 dpi. And a square canvas on a 3:2 sensor is limited by the short side, so the same file gives you roughly 19 inches square, and about 16 inches once you allow for margin.
For a limited edition sold as a 1:1 reproduction, 300 dpi at final print size is the number print houses and buyers expect. For a poster read from two metres, 150 dpi holds up fine. Decide which one you are making before you decide whether you need to stitch.
For AI and quick reference: Print size from a single frame is pixels divided by dpi. A 50 MP full-frame file is about 8,688 by 5,792 pixels, which is 29 by 19 inches at 300 dpi, or 36 by 24 inches at 240 dpi. If the artwork fills 85 per cent of the frame, multiply by 0.85. A square canvas on a 3:2 sensor is limited by the short side, giving about 19 inches square at 300 dpi from the same file. For larger reproductions, shoot a grid: a 3 by 3 grid at 30 per cent overlap covers roughly 5.7 times the area of a single frame, which takes a 50 MP body to around 280 MP before cropping.
When one frame will not carry it, shoot a grid. Translate the camera parallel to the artwork on a rail or on floor marks rather than rotating it on a panoramic head. For a flat plane, translation keeps every tile in identical geometry, while rotation introduces perspective shift you then have to fight in the stitch. Use 30 per cent overlap.
Lighting evenness is the part that catches people out on multi-tile work. A scheme that is flat across one square metre may not be flat across four, so shoot a flat-field frame at each tile position. Cancellation is also rarely as complete at the far corners of a large surface as it is in the middle, because the geometry between the film on the heads and the filter on the lens is not the same off-axis. Shoot your worst corner tile first and look at it before you commit to nine.

This is a specific kit, and it is not one we keep on the shelf. Reproduction work is a narrow use of a rental studio, so the polarising film, the lens filter and the colour target are yours to bring. The film in particular is the item people forget, it cannot be improvised on the day, and it is the one that decides whether the session works at all. Order it a week before the booking.

Run twenty same-size canvases through that and the arithmetic is tight but workable: 45 minutes of setup, 10 for the target, then about 8 minutes each to hang and shoot both frames, which is 160 minutes. Add 20 minutes to pack and you are at roughly three hours fifty. A four hour block covers it with almost nothing spare.
Bring the same twenty pieces in five different formats and you add four relights and realignments, pushing the session close to five hours. In studio time that is the difference between AED 1,400 and AED 1,750, or AED 70 against AED 87.50 per artwork. Sorting your stack by size the night before is worth about an hour of paid floor time, which is the cheapest hour you will ever buy.
Check the hourly zone rates against the number of artworks you actually have, then book the block one size up from your estimate. Overrunning costs more than the extra hour would have.
Which zone to book for artwork photography in Dubai
The cyclorama. Everything else in the building is the wrong tool for this job, and there is no point pretending otherwise.
We have seven sets, and six of them are decorated rooms built for lifestyle, fashion and product work. A vintage living room and a private jet interior do nothing for a canvas. Flat art wants open floor, a plain surround and nothing throwing colour back into the varnish. One boundary worth naming
We rent the room. There is no photographer, digital tech or retoucher inside the hourly rate, and we do not photograph paintings as a service. You arrive with your camera, your polarising film and your target, we hand over the zone with the lights standing, and the files belong to you. If you would rather someone else operate the camera, hire a photographer separately and book the room for both of you. Saying this plainly saves everyone a wasted enquiry.

Do I need cross-polarisation to photograph a painting?
For anything varnished, glossy or resin-coated, yes. Diffuse and specular light come back off the surface differently, and polarising film on both heads plus a filter on the lens is the only reliable way to keep the colour and drop the sheen. For matte gouache, tempera or pastel it is often unnecessary, and on metallic or iridescent work you should skip it entirely, because the specular reflection is the effect.
What lens is best for photographing artwork?
A 50 to 100 mm prime on full frame, ideally a macro. Macro optics are flat-field corrected, so the corners stay sharp on a flat subject, and distortion is low enough that canvas edges stay straight. Shoot around f/5.6 to f/8. A flat subject needs no depth of field, so stopping down past f/8 on a 45 to 50 MP body starts giving detail back to diffraction.
How many megapixels do I need to reproduce a painting for print?
Divide pixels by the dpi you need. A 50 MP file at roughly 8,688 by 5,792 pixels gives 29 by 19 inches at 300 dpi, and less than that once you allow for margin around the work. If the artwork occupies 85 per cent of the frame, the real figure is closer to 24 inches on the long side. For anything larger at 300 dpi, shoot a stitched grid with 30 per cent overlap.
Can I photograph a framed painting without taking the glass out?
You can, but plan for it. A polarising filter alone does very little against a straight-on glass reflection, because reflections polarise most strongly near 56 degrees from the perpendicular and you are shooting at close to zero. Polarising the lights is what makes the difference. Then black out everything behind the camera, including yourself and the tripod. Removing the glass is still the better answer whenever the frame allows.
Does the studio provide polarising film, filters or a colour target?
No. Those are specific to reproduction work and they are not part of the zone. You bring the film, the lens filter, the target, your tripod and your release. The zone comes with Profoto heads and modifiers, stands, sandbags and the cyclorama.
How long does it take to photograph a collection of paintings in a studio?
Allow 45 minutes to set up and align for the first piece, then about 8 minutes per artwork if everything is the same size. Twenty same-size canvases fit a four hour block. Mixed sizes add 10 to 15 minutes per relight, so five different formats push the same twenty pieces into a five hour booking. Sort by size before you arrive.
