Most of Dubai’s rental studios cluster in four zones: Al Quoz, Business Bay, Tecom (Dubai Media City / Barsha Heights), and the southern corridor around Dubai Investment Park and Dubai South. Each one attracts a different crowd and prices accordingly.

Al Quoz is the old workhorse. It’s a mixed industrial belt packed with everything from bare white-box rooms to fully kitted production spaces, which is why prices there swing so wide. Business Bay and Tecom are central and pricier, aimed at agencies and brands who want a downtown address and will pay for it. The southern corridor, DIP and Dubai South, is the quiet one. Industrial-zone commercial rent is a fraction of central rent, so a studio out here can offer a bigger room, free parking, and a lower hourly rate and still make the numbers work.

The short version: a good rental hands you a lit, dressed room and the space to work. You bring the camera, the creative, and the people in front of it. The line between the two is where studios differ most, so ask before you book.

At SkyLight, the room comes with Profoto lighting, backdrops, and a finished set. What you carry in is your camera body and lenses, your styling and props, wardrobe, and your own photographer if you’re not shooting yourself. We rent the space and the gear. We don’t shoot it for you.

How long does setup take once you arrive?

Straight answer: for a standard shoot, expect 15 to 30 minutes of setup before you’re making real frames. The set is already built and lit, so you’re adjusting for your look, not building from scratch.

That’s the whole point of a themed rental over a bare white box. In an empty room you burn the first hour assembling a scene. Here the loft is a loft when you walk in; the kitchen has the props on the counter. You dial in the lighting for your subject, place your talent, and shoot.

SkyLight rents you the space and the equipment. We’re a self-service studio, not a production agency. You book the room, the lighting, and the set, then shoot it yourself or with your own photographer. We don’t provide a videographer, a creative crew, or a «we’ll shoot it for you» service.

What’s included in the rental, and what you bring

Every booking already has lights in the room. You bring the camera, the styling, and the vision.

A standard photo session at SkyLight includes two studio flash heads plus whatever modifier you need, already rigged. That covers a clean portrait or product setup out of the box: a key light, a fill, and something to soften it. You don’t rent light as a separate line for a normal photo shoot.

The set follows the shoot. Match the environment to what you’re actually selling, and the edit does half the work for you.

Rent a studio or hire a photographer? What’s actually cheaper

Renting a studio and hiring a photographer are two different purchases, and confusing them is the most common mistake I see. One is a room. The other is a person and their finished images.

If you already shoot, or you have a friend who does, renting the space alone is far cheaper: you pay for the room and keep every frame you take. If you need someone to direct, shoot, edit, and hand you finished pictures, that’s a photographer’s fee on top of (or instead of) a rental, and it lives on the production side of things, not here.

This is about the room, not a service, and I want to be clear on that. SkyLight is a rental space, not a production house. But the building in DIP2 is quiet and isolated at night: no neighbouring units running, no road noise, no foot traffic. That makes it a clean environment to record a talking-head interview, lay down voiceover, or shoot anything where a stray sound ruins the take. You bring your own recording gear and operator; the space stays quiet around you.

Dubai daytime heat is real, and load-in under a midday sun is its own kind of misery. At night the drive is cooler, carrying gear from car to set is easier, and if your shoot involves anything that struggles in heat, the timing helps.

DIP2 is quiet at night in the best way. Free parking right at the entrance. Empty roads on the way in, no Marina or Downtown gridlock eating your call time. The mechanic: it’s the daytime process, extended past 10pm. No special form, no different channel.

Loft, living room, private jet, container, kitchen, the cyclorama: nothing is off-limits after hours. If you want a multi-look night, remember pricing is per zone, so a full-night block on two zones is two blocks. What’s included after hours

What you get: the same kit as a daytime booking, no downgrade for night. After-hours and full-night bookings include exactly what a daytime slot does.

Every booking comes with 2 studio flashes plus modifiers, free. That’s your working light out of the box. Profoto is included free on video bookings; on photo bookings it’s available on request, just ask when you confirm. Bring your own camera, lenses, cards, and any recording gear you need for interviews or voiceover.

Overnight etiquette, access and security at night

House rules: same as daytime, plus a bit more self-reliance since the building is quiet. A few practical points:

• Access is for your window. You get the space for the hours you booked. Full-night runs 10pm–8am; plan your load-out before 8am.
• Up to 10 people per zone. Capacity is the same at night, up to 10 people per zone.
• Leave it as you found it. Reset the set, take your rubbish, no damage. Standard renter courtesy.
• You’re largely on your own. Overnight the building is quiet, which is the whole point, so keep your gear secure and your crew to your booked zone.

One thing to ask: if you have a specific access question for a late slot, raise it on WhatsApp before the night.

Cap, gown, tassel and props: what to bring and how to style it

Bring your own gown. We supply the space and the lights, not the regalia, so plan the outfit before you arrive.

Most graduates source the gown through their university, or rent through a supplier like Ede & Ravenscroft, or grab it as part of a photographer’s package. We don’t stock caps or gowns, and that keeps your rental cheaper because you’re only paying for the room.

A few things that make the frames look right:

• Tassel side. Tradition puts the tassel on the right before you graduate and the left after. If you want the «officially done» look, shoot it on the left.
• Mortarboard flat. Keep the cap level and pushed slightly back off the forehead so your eyes stay visible, not shadowed under the brim.
• What to wear underneath. White, cream, or pastel photographs cleanest under most gown colours. Busy prints fight the gown, so keep it simple.
• Double-sided tape. Gowns shift and gape. A strip of tape keeps the collar sitting straight between shots.
• The cap-throw. Save it for last on the cyclorama. Throw on a count, shoot in burst, and expect a few tries before everyone’s cap peaks at the same height.

Lighting and setup: what the studio provides

Every booking includes two studio flash heads plus any modifier you need, already in the room. You don’t rent light separately for a standard photo session.

That covers a clean gown portrait out of the box: key light, fill, and a modifier to soften it. Profoto gear comes free on video bookings, and it’s available on photo bookings on request as a separate add-on. If your photographer wants to bring their own strobes instead, that’s fine too, the sets are yours to light how you like.

How long to book and the best time to shoot

For a solo grad, one hour is enough for two backdrops. For a group or family, book two hours so nobody’s rushed through the tassel-and-throw sequence.

Studio lighting is part of the room. You walk in, it’s set, you shoot. One thing I want to be precise about, because it trips people up: the 2 Profoto flashes come free only on video bookings. For photo-only sessions, Profoto is available separately if you want it. The room’s continuous and modeling lighting is included, but the Profoto pair isn’t bundled into the photo rate. I’d rather tell you that upfront than have you arrive expecting it.

White, grey or black backdrop

Family portraits live and die on the backdrop. White gives you that clean, bright, editorial look most parents picture. Grey is the forgiving middle: flattering skin tones, no harsh contrast, hides a multitude of toddler-sock chaos. Black is dramatic and works beautifully for multi-generation portraits where you want everyone’s faces to carry the frame.

You own the camera decision. Hire a freelancer, bring a friend who shoots, or set up a tripod and do it yourself. The room doesn’t care, and neither do we. We rent space, not a shot list.

This is the part packages quietly take away from you. In a package, you get the studio’s photographer, their style, their pace. Some families love that. Others have a photographer they trust, or a specific aesthetic in mind, and a package forces a stranger into the most personal photos they’ll take all year. Renting hands the choice back.

How to bring or choose a photographer

If you’re hiring, book your photographer first and your studio slot second, then confirm both times line up with a buffer on each end. The 8×6 m cyclorama comfortably holds a large multi-generation group: think 8 to 12 people standing, plus room to seat grandparents and let kids move. For a couple with two toddlers, it’s frankly enormous, which is exactly what you want when a two-year-old decides the shoot is a running event.

Space is the thing packages skimp on. A cramped studio with a paper roll backdrop works for a headshot, not for a family of ten or a toddler who won’t hold still. The cyclorama gives kids room to run, roll, and be photographed doing it; often the shots parents love most aren’t the posed ones.

Newborn and baby sessions: what a rental can and can’t do

Here’s where I’ll talk you out of a rental if it’s wrong for you. A studio rental gives you a warm, private, controllable space for baby and family photos, but posed newborn photography (the kind with a sleeping infant curled into props) is a specialist skill, and it is not something a rented room provides.

What a rental does well for babies: sitter and milestone sessions (6 months, first birthday), lifestyle family shots with a baby in the frame, and any session where a parent or a photographer holds and handles the child. The room is private, climate-controlled, and you control the pace. Bring a portable heater if your newborn needs extra warmth; many parents do.

What a rental does not do: posed newborn work. Those images (infant balanced in a hammock, hands under chin) depend on newborn-specific posing and baby-safety training, spotting, and composite techniques. That is the job of a certified newborn photographer, and safety here is not negotiable. We rent the space; we do not pose or handle babies, and we won’t imply we do.

If posed newborn is what you want, hire a newborn specialist who brings their own safe posing setup. They can absolutely work in our room, but the expertise comes from them, not from us. Straight talk beats a booking I’d regret.
